Watch our 2 minute recap video of the U4O Wave-a-Thon!
On Saturday, December 5, 2020, Unity 4 Orphans hosted its first annual Wave-A-Thon to gain funding for the Nicaragua Dream Center. We rallied 23 surfers who came together to raise over $20,000 through wave sponsors and donations. We are so grateful for each and every supporter who helped make this dream a reality.
We could not have done this without the help of nearly a dozen volunteers who took the time to host the event including setup and breakdown in addition to a generous donor who provided Unity 4 Orphansβ first two branded canopies. We hope to use these in-kind donations in a safer and healthier new year as we re-envision opportunities to connect with our amazing community and make a difference together.
The families and children we support in Nicaragua have had a tough year. With the loss of tourism income due to the global pandemic and recent hurricanes, and the adjustment to distanced programs, they have been forced to adapt and make do with the little they have.
Many families can only afford one device for the children to attend Unity 4 Orphans English classes, schooling, tutoring, and counseling and internet reception is often spotty. This sets the children back even more as they attempt to adjust. These new challenges have made the need for a dedicated learning center even more pressing.
We hope the U4O facility will provide the space to generate the opportunity and momentum needed to help each child break the cycle of poverty. With land previously purchased in 2019, the 2020 inaugural Wave-A-Thon fundraiser brought us one step closer to beginning construction on our Nicaragua Dream Center in 2021.
We are feeling revived and hopeful for what the new year holds for Unity 4 Orphans and the Miramar community as we advocate together for the lives of those who need us most.
