Unity 4 Orphans is thrilled to announce that we received a grant from Qualcomm, enabling us to purchase Chromebooks for the children we serve in Mexico!
Qualcomm, which stands for “QUALity COMMunications,” is a company headquartered in San Diego committed to the spirit of invention and innovation. Since 1985 they have helped drive improvements in communication worldwide, a simple but vital need for the children we serve to receive an education and succeed in school.
Lack of Educational Resources is a Challenge for Vulnerable Children
Qualcomm’s mission is to “bring intelligent computing everywhere.” Through a generous grant, they’re helping U4O provide this vital resource to children living in poverty south of the border.
We’re grateful that a San Diego-based company is committed not just to helping people in their own community, but also to giving back so children in Mexico have resources to be more successful in their educational endeavors. They not only gave this gift, but Qualcomm also has a generous employee matching program that enables donations made to Unity 4 Orphans to have an even larger impact!
–Caitlin Snyder, Executive Director
Many obstacles get in the way of learning for the children we serve at orphanages and community centers in Tijuana. Whereas some are caused by abandonment and abuse that inflict emotional trauma, other obstacles are simply due to a lack of educational resources.
Qualcomm Grant Provides Chromebooks to Vulnerable Children in Mexico
Thanks to Qualcomm, we were able to provide Chromebooks to four community centers in neighborhoods with high rates of violence on the streets and in homes. We also equipped four ESL teachers with laptops to train more than 300 children served by our programs in Tijuana.
The rehabilitation center for adolescents received five laptops, supporting our belief that training them for life will open doors and direct them toward something beneficial and away from drugs. Chromebooks were also given to six children from low-income families to facilitate their education and keep them from dropping out of school.
Although the internet is a necessity to stay connected in today’s world, the reality is that in the areas we serve in Mexico, only two out of every ten households have laptops. We are incredibly grateful to Qualcomm for giving us these tools.
–Marco Aguilera, Mexico Programs Director
Thanks to Marco and our Mexico team, including Rene and Cristina at the Teen Learning Center for distributing the Chromebooks. These vital tools make a huge difference for children like Melissa, a fourth grader whose single mom is trying to lift her four children out of poverty through education. We’re so thankful to Qualcomm for helping us bridge the digital divide with tools to help vulnerable children succeed!
