New ESL Curriculum Brings Even Brighter Futures to Students in Nicaragua!

U4O students in Miramar, Nicaragua have received the new Oxford curriculum for their English as a Second Language studies. The ESL curriculum elevates the quality of instruction for our students, and provides more resources, resulting in reduced prep time for our dedicated teachers.

Unity 4 Orphans is thrilled to share the news that the students in our ESL program in Miramar, Nicaragua have begun studying with a higher-quality curriculum! This has been a longtime goal, one which was realized through the efforts of many from our dedicated community of volunteers in San Diego.

San Diego Volunteers’ Philanthropic Efforts for Bilingual Education

At our 2nd annual Wave-A-Thon in August 2021, volunteers and supporters raised the funds needed to purchase a superior educational program from Oxford University Press to elevate the quality of learning, simplify instruction for our hardworking teachers, and provide our students with the best vehicle for English fluency. This important skill greatly expands future opportunities for the kids in their educational pursuits and future career paths.

We evaluated several options for ESL curriculum and like the way Oxford presents the material. The student workbooks offer hands-on activities that we know our students will enjoy and the lessons plans will be a great asset for our teaching team

– Laigthany Gomez, Miramar ESL Program Director

Much of the work in Miramar is tied to the hospitality industry, as it is a favorite spot amongst surfers and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. Other than that, it is historically a remote fishing village with limited opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. Families in Miramar often struggle to keep food on the table and maintain the most basic of housing needs.

ESL Studies Provide Opportunities to Underprivileged Kids in Latin America

With the elevation of education and fluency in English, doors open considerably to higher-paying work with increased job security. As the teachers in Miramar can attest, watching the students grow in skill and confidence is a direct result of this mastery, and we’re thrilled to help provide the kids with hope and brighter futures!

Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts, from the surfers and vendors, to the volunteers who helped make the Wave-A-Thon a success. We look forward to sharing the progress the kids make with the new curriculum, and celebrating their successes together!
