Unity 4 Orphans’ English as a Second Language (ESL) program in a small village in Nicaragua recently celebrated the graduation of four bilingual students who are headed for bright futures!
Graduation season in the US is a time of celebration and hope, sentiments we share with our recent ESL program graduates in Nicaragua. Our program director, counselor, and teachers have been guiding students to English fluency since 2017, backed by the U4O community’s support, and we couldn’t be more proud of our four graduates!
English as a Second Language (ESL) Opens Doors for Vulnerable Children
U4O’s English program in a small fishing village continues to open doors to opportunities for children vulnerable to the cycle of poverty. Our holistic approach not only teaches ESL but also offers counseling to help students overcome trauma, build self-esteem, and believe in their ability to achieve more than they’ve witnessed in their families and communities.
I always talk with the kids and tell them that the opportunities I’ve had are because I speak English. I have 18 years of work experience, and since I decided to work in English, I haven’t had a month without a job.
–Lai, Nica Program Director
A child growing up in poverty faces dangers like falling prey to gangs and cartels, teenage pregnancy, human trafficking, and being trapped in the relentless cycle of generational poverty. Learning to speak English gives them a powerful tool that helps secure reliable employment and raise healthy families when they grow up.
Unity 4 Orphans’ Holistic Programs Instill Self-Confidence
For the past four years, students in our ESL program have also received counseling through Healing 4 Change. This has provided support and, at times, crucial intervention to help them overcome abuse and trauma. They’ve learned to believe in their potential to earn a high school diploma, attend university if they choose, and secure employment that supports themselves and their families.
As we celebrate the end of this course, we also celebrate all of the effort, dedication, and growth that we have achieved in our journey of learning English.
–Karina, ESL Program Graduate
Karina’s story continues to inspire her peers and brings hope to students at the early stages of learning ESL. We’ve watched her and her fellow graduates from beginning to end in their English journey, and they’ve all been generous with their time and talents to help other children believe in themselves.
U4O Celebrates Our 2025 Program Graduates and Looks to the Future
We’re so proud of the hard work and dedication of our 2025 ESL program graduates! As they’ve grown and learned, it’s only through the support of the U4O community that their dreams have the potential to become reality. They’ve set an example for their younger classmates that proves they, too, can achieve English language proficiency.
Now I can make my dreams come true, because I have my (ESL) certification. Thank you!
–Hesteysi, ESL Program Graduate
These real-life transformation stories inspire all of us, from our US-based team to the incredible team in Nica, who have shepherded the graduates to the finish line. Join us in celebrating these incredible students and invest in the futures of many more children who will follow in their footsteps!
